Although Beefalo have been around since the 70’s, there is still some speculation surrounding the breeding of them. They were first bred by a Californian by the name of DC “Bud” Basolo who thought to breed American Bison and Domestic Cattle together. The amount of Bison is crucial for this cattle, it set at 3/8th’s with the domestic cattle amount set at 5/8th’s. It took some trial and error in order to achieve this animal, being that the first trials resulted in infertile Beefalo which wasn’t the overall goal. Through generations of Beefalo, the perfect Bison percentage was achieved and we can now fruitfully raise healthy Beefalo.
In regards to the danger levels surrounding the breeding of Beefalo, they are relatively low. The animal itself has a supreme genetic makeup that makes it hardier and more resistant to disease. They have wonderful coats that keep them warm in the winter and keep them cool in the heat. Beefalo are also pretty docile and easy to manage, making them optimal for raising. They aren’t too aggressive by nature, but they do have the tendency to kick when you milk them.
Lastly, like I stated above, Beefalo is luckily a fertile animal. The first attempt didn’t result in fertile offspring, but we have since made progression and have fertile Beefalo that actively mate throughout their lifetime. Dams are also very good mothers. Beefalo make very good cattle to raise and manage and also produce healthy offspring with low-stress calf delivery.
